General Manager

£27,629 to £32,958 plus pension

About the role

This position represents a fantastic opportunity to take on a senior management position within the Graduate Union, a small and fast-changing not-for-profit organisation responsible for representing postgraduate students undertaking advanced study and research at the highest international levels of excellence at the University of Cambridge. You will be hugely important to the development of the organisation, working with the trustees and the members to develop a strategic plan for the union, and as such will have the opportunity to shape your own role as well as the union itself.

The General Manager is the chief executive of the Graduate Union and reports directly to the Board of Trustees. The General Manager works closely with the chair of the Board, who is also the elected student President and the General Manager’s day-to-day line manager, alongside the other full-time elected officers and a small team of part-time staff.

About you

You will have exceptional organisational skills, and be able to work to multiple deadlines. You are capable of working effectively both without supervision and as a member of a team, often under pressure, and will be able to rapidly assimilate new skills and knowledge to meet novel challenges. You can identify, prioritise, and implement the tasks that will best serve the strategic goals of the union. You will be able to understand and convey complex financial and policy information, and utilise excellent interpersonal and political skills in order to achieve the best results for the union in a complex, democratic, and multi-stakeholder environment.

Key responsibilities

You will exercise a general superintendence over the day-to-day operations of the union, serving as the Board’s delegated deputy “on the ground”; while also ensuring that the union’s strategic goals are achieved. You will have oversight of the union’s part-time staff, financial management, governance, and regulatory compliance. You will also support the elected officers in delivering their goals, and provide them with advice on practical, regulatory, and financial matters.


You need not have any specific employment background, but experience within a students’ union, not-for-profit or higher education organisation would be helpful. What is more important is that you have developed the right skills for the role.
