last modified Oct 31, 2019 03:47 PM

On 21st October, GU Council passed a motion endorsing a referendum on the proposals for the creation of a new, single students’ union in the form of Cambridge SU. This motion passed with 13 votes for and none against with three abstentions, and mandated the GU Executive to campaign in favour of the referendum. Following this the GU trustees have resolved to call a referendum of members of the Graduate Union.

On Monday 28th October, a similar motion was presented to CUSU Council.

The motion resolved:

  1. To endorse the proposals for the creation of a new, single students’ union in the form of Cambridge SU;
  2. To authorise a referendum on the creation of Cambridge SU, to be held on the basis of the timetable set out in Appendix A;
  3. To mandate the CUSU Executive to campaign in favour of the proposals;
  4. To mandate the CUSU Executive to work with the existing CUSU Campaigns and their GU Executive counterparts in devising structures of the new Campaigns in Cambridge SU.

The motion passed with 33 for and 4 against.

A general meeting of the Graduate Union to discuss the matter for referendum will be held in the University Centre on 14th November at 7pm. All members of the Graduate Union are invited to attend and speak.

The referendum will be held alongside the Michaelmas elections for the GU Executive Committee and NUS delegates. Voting in the referendum will take place between Monday 18th November and Thursday 21st November.

For the referendum to pass, there must be a simple majority in favour with at least 10% of CUSU membership voting, and 200 GU members cast a vote and the majority of votes cast are in favour. Further referendum information will be published shortly.
