Events

With one of the most diverse graduate student bodies of the country, it would be hard not be find something of interest to you in Cambridge. Graduate-only events are organised by the Graduate Union, College MCRs and a couple of societies which particularly target graduate students.

Many events of interest to graduate students are advertised in the GU’s weekly email bulletin. Most GU members will receive this automatically every Sunday night, but if you are not on our list you can subscribe online or by sending an email to bulletin@gradunion.cam.ac.uk.

The GU also provides an online calendar of forthcoming events. Students can submit their own events via a web interface, and at the same time request that details are included in the bulletin.

Events can be divided into 4 broad categories, based on who organises them:

The Graduate Union and CUSU

In recent years, the Graduate Union has organised a large and increasing variety of events and services for its members, from massage sessions to film nights and parties to port tastings. Posters and term cards should be displayed in your college and events will be advertised in the bulletin. You can check details of previous and forthcoming events on our events website.

CUSU Ents organises a variety of events weekly during the term, and provides discounts on tickets – check their website and register. Regular events include club nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays and cocktail nights on Mondays.

College MCRs

Many colleges, especially the graduate colleges such as Darwin and Wolfson, run events which are open to grads from across the university. These are advertised on their web pages and again through the weekly GU Email Bulletin. The bar at Darwin is a favourite on Friday evenings. All Colleges and MCRs have an ents programme, typically including exchange Halls with other Colleges, bops, and video nights.

Colleges and their music societies often host concerts, particularly of classical music. These are often advertised in college event calendars and the websites of their music societies or chapels (where many concerts are held), and on posters around town.

Student Societies

Many clubs and societies put on events on a regular basis. See under ‘Sports and Societies‘ for how to find ones of interest.

Local events around the city

Cambridge has several venues for live music and plays, which have their own websites:

The city has 2 large multiple-screen cinemas and an arts cinema, with several film festivals during the year. Look out for flyers, posters, and ads in the local papers, and free monthly magazine, the Explorer. You can also visit their websites:

Several colleges also have film societies, and the GU and some MCRs also arrange film viewings.
