The Institute of Biotechnology is a centre of excellence in biotechnology research, demonstrated by the Queen’s Award for Technological Achievement in 1996, and a grade of 5 in the last Research Assessment Exercise.

It was established in 1988 to meet demands for highly skilled research personnel, and the knowledge necessary for continuing expansion of the scientific platform upon which biotechnology innovations are based.

A unique aspect of the Institute is a multi-disciplinary approach, fostering and encouraging interactive project work with in-house and external groups. This strength gives the Institute wide-ranging and important links within University departments, local, national and international companies.

The Institute occupies modern, well-equipped laboratories in the heart of Cambridge. Facilities include laboratories for bio-chemistry, molecular and cell biology, electrochemistry, optics, cleanroom biology and electronics, with comprehensive IT support.

As the heart of Biotechnology is the fact that everyone is friendly and sociable, creating a fun and productive atmosphere in which to work.
