The African Studies Centre exists to support research and teaching within the University. There are many students at Cambridge writing theses or taking courses on Africa; but there are as yet no official degrees available in African Studies. M.Phil and Ph.D candidates can specialise in African topics but must register in one of the Departments or Faculties. At any time around 70 Ph.D Projects relating to Africa are in progress, ranging from Archaeology to Zoology, via Architecture, Biological and Social Anthrophology, Economics, Geography, History, Land Economy, Social and Political Science and more besides.
The Centre offers a specialised Library containing over 27,000 books from or about Africa, a film and video archive and casy access to newspapers and magazines. High priority is placed on obtaining material from Africa and thus a substantial percentage of the titles held are not available elsewhere in Cambridge. Boasting one of the best views in Cambridge, the Library is open to all members of the University and others by arrangement. More information can be found on the Library web page.
During the academic year the Centre runs a regular research seminar series, with topics on many different and interdisciplinary aspects of social, economic and cultural interest. All seminars are open to the public. The Centre also hosts occasional workshops, conferences and exhibitions.
