Murray Edwards is an attractive college set about half a mile from the city centre of Cambridge. It is a women’s only college established in 1954 which attracts a wide range of students from a host of International backgrounds. This internationally diverse community of graduates offers a healthy mix of both scientists and humanities students, both pursuing MPhil and PhD degrees.
The Graduate community is a lively one, represented by the MCR (Middle Combination Room) committee. Each year a number of graduates are elected to serve as representative for the community of graduates. Those who are elected represent graduate interests at various university committee meetings throughout the year. However these elected reps also make sure that New Hall graduates have an exciting social calendar to keep them busy! Every week, Formal Hall takes place and this is an excellent opportunity for graduates to mingle as well as introduce their guest friends to other graduates. Formal Hall is free for all New Hall graduates, which is a pretty good perk, as few colleges offer this gratuity. You may also be interested to know that the college MCR supplies wine for each meal too!
After Formal Hall, it is usual practice to go to the Middle Combination Room itself where graduates enjoy after drinks coffee and the famous tasty New Hall mints! Murray Edwards may be a single-sex college but there is plenty of opportunity to meet members of the opposite sex. As well as meeting other graduates in your own department, the MCR facilitates socialising with those from other colleges by regularly arranging exchange Formal Halls with other Colleges interested in attending Formal Hall at New Hall.
The MCR also arranges subsidised parties like the Christmas Brunch and Annual Garden Party, hosts movie/game nights, and plans other fun social activities like punting trips and wine tasting dinners. The MCR itself has numerous facilities on offer free to graduates, such as a video/DVD player, television, laundry room, and computer room. The MCR also has subscriptions to newspapers for graduates to take advantage of.
As for keeping up with all the MCR events, don’t worry because you will regularly receive a copy of the MCR Newsletter The Graduate Voice which is issued twice a term. It keeps our members informed of events going on in college. Contributions to the newsletter from all our graduates are encouraged. The MCR awards a number of research grants each year to assist graduates with their travelling expenses incurred during fieldwork and whilst attending conferences. Some help is also available for purchasing books required for research.
Guests are always welcome and find the Murray Edwards MCR a friendly, informal and open community. Our diversity is an invaluable asset which we are eager to foster. No doubt Murray Edwards MCR will continue to grow thanks to the efforts of past, present and future committees and the contribution of all New Hall members.
