Magdalene (say ‘maudlin’) Magdalene is one of the smaller Colleges, and one of the friendliest. The College doesn’t play a course-related role in the life of most graduates, but it does offer a community of different ages, interests, and nationalities, honoring the best of Magdalene and Cambridge tradition.

The MCR runs a diverse program of entertainments designed to create a collegial and welcoming atmosphere for all men and women of the college. This is promoted primarily through our weekly BA Dinner, where graduates and their guests gather on Friday evenings to dine by candlelight in the Great Hall. The size of the graduate community (about 160 members) means that you will make many friends in the MCR community during your time at Cambridge. Our membership ranges in age from 21 to approximately 40 years of age, with most graduate students in their early to mid-20′s.

While the MCR provides the main social focus for graduate students, the college itself has a variety of opportunities for all students to participate in sports, drama, musical, and intellectual clubs and activities. Major scholarships are available to graduate students including the Magdalene Donner and Leslie Wilson scholarships, and two prestigious Bye Fellowships are available to students entering their third year of PhD study.

The college grounds are beautiful and compact, located about a 10 minute walk from the Market Square. As one of Cambridge’s ancient colleges, Magdalene has an enviable reputation due to its continuing connection with disappearing Cambridge traditions such as nightly formal hall and its exclusive May Ball, while nurturing a diverse, international, and down-to-earth graduate community. If you have made it as far as Cambridge, you know that your experience at Magdalene, like all the other achievements so far in your life, will be exactly what you make it.
