Hello, I need a very important information.
In April 2010, I will start one-year research studies for a diploma (full time, residence 3 terms) in a theoretical field of study (that by its own nature involves no applied research) and I have an offer from Hughes Hall. I will have no coursework except of a non-obligatory seminar, which nevertheless starts in September (so, as I will start in april and I have to finish till next april, I will not be able to attend it complete…). I live in a European Union country, not in UK, I have already accomplished a PhD degree, I am working and I have many professional and family responsibilities. I have read that I am not obliged to stay IN the college but I am free to stay within 10 miles from Cambridge etc etc. I am fully aware of the regulations about residence. As I have secured the offer since May 2009, I have been preparing (reading, writing) my essay for 6 months till now in contact with my supervisor.
Now, I am asking for an informal (I think that it wouldn't be a good idea to ask the college) but precise answer. My question is the following:
Given the fact that I am going to keep in regular touch with my supervisor, collect my research material and generally do everything necessary for my project, that I am going to pay everything (including college fees) and that I will try to participate in everything that is related to my studies and fits in my interests.
Have I to reside ACTUALLY in the University, permanently (I mean for the period mentioned in the regulations)?

Of course, I know that according to the regulations, the residence requirement is not depended on the real attendance requirements (I have not at all any attendance requirement). However, firstly I find it a bit absurd staying in Cambridge without any reason AT ALL for almost one year. Second, and this is the important thing, very serious professional and family obligations in my home country, make it very difficult for me to be absent for more than 5-10 days per month. So, given the fact that I am not obliged by the regulations to reside in the University but I can live outside the college, although paying the relevant fees, could I formally or informally reduce or even skip permanent residence by any means? And if yes, what is the procedure?
I am sorry if the above sound a bit strange to you and if I was 20-25 years old I would be excited to reside in Cambridge, however I am very confused and anxious about all the above.
Please, do not repeat me the regulation or give me an answer about how good is the residence, I am really hard-pushed so as to ask questions like the above…
Answers by pm or in the thread would be valuable.
Thank you in advance.

Ask your college. The residency requirement is to 'keep term', which means to stay within 10 miles of Great St Mary's church between midnight and 6am for at least three quarters of the nights in Michaelmas, Lent and Easter terms. Have a read of this:
http://www.gradunion.cam.ac.uk/postgrad/term.html

That means you can technically be out of Cambridge for about 195 of the 365 days in the year, but you must spend about 60 nights between October and December, 60 nights between January and March and 50 nights between April and June. Exact dates on the bottom of:
http://www.cam.ac.uk/univ/termdates.html

Can you arrange your time to fit in with these periods? At the end of the day if you don't live in college it's unlikely anyone will check, but it's possible you could be summoned to a meeting (by your faculty, for example) who would assume you are in Cambridge for the periods of Full Term.
