Hard Document Binding

The Graduate Union is the only point in Cambridge city centre where you can arrange hard case document binding.

The binding is performed to University-approved standards by J.S. Wilson & Son Bookbinders Ltd, the oldest trading bookbinders in the UK. Your work will be traditionally hand-sewn and bound, and there are plenty of styling options to select from, including a wide range of cover colours and decorative and strengthening elements. Document and CD pockets are also available.
 
 
 
 
 

Opening Hours

You can place your order at the Graduate Union Shop any time during Shop opening hours. Hours are subject to change so please check before each visit.

Price

Prices are listed on the Order Form (below) and start at £34.99 per copy. We take cash only and you can either pay when you place your order or on collection. Be sure to ask your college, supervisor and/or department about claiming back this expenditure, and ask for a receipt from the Shop to submit with your claim.

Page Margins

The binders prefer 3cm on the binding edge and 2cm on the other three edges.

Minimum Requirements for the University Library Copy of PhD Thesis

Must be hard bound, with title, initials and surname reading down the spine. Letter colour must be gold. The cover colour is up to you.

Turnaround

Usual turnaround is 2-5 working days (though this will be affected by Shop closures and Bank Holidays; see ‘Shop Opening Hours’ above):

• Handed in for the 10:30am Monday collection → ready 11:00am Wednesday
• Handed in for the 10:30am Wednesday collection → ready 11:00am Friday
• Handed in for the 10:30am Friday collection → ready 11:00am the following Wednesday

How to Place an Order

1. Complete the Order Form (below)
2. Print your document(s)
3. Drop your order form/s and document/s in at the Shop
4. Payment is upfront or on collection, cash only
5. Return to the GU when advised to collect your bound document/s

Order Form

To make an order you need to complete an Order Form to submit along with your document/s. If you require more than one document to be bound, please complete a separate order form for each document that has a variation in style. If the only variation is the cover colour, you need only complete one form.

There are two versions of the form:
Order Form – electronic copy (to download and complete on computer)
Order Form – hard copy (to download, print and complete by hand)

Remote Printing, Binding and Delivery/Postal Service

If you no longer live in Cambridge you can arrange with the Graduate Union to have your work printed, bound and delivered to any number of University of Cambridge addresses. Please email the Executive Administrator at enquiries@gradunion.cam.ac.uk to enquire about printing options, charges, payment options and turnaround time. There is an additional £5 administrative fee for this service.

Delivery to non-University of Cambridge addresses, including to national and international destinations, can be arranged directly with the binders once you have placed your order at the GU Shop; see ‘Emergency Service’ (below) for their contact details. The binders will charge you separately for delivery.

Emergency Service

For a quicker turnaround you can place your order directly with the binders. You do not need to complete an order form and extra charges will apply. Please contact them in advance to confirm their opening hours, turnaround time and charges. You will need to take your document(s) to their premises and can take the Citi 3 bus from St Andrew’s Street, or a taxi from the town centre for approximately £8.
