Post-Colonial and Other Pedagogies: Around the work of Gayatri Spivak (10
Oct)
****************************************************************************
**
Friday 10th October 2008, 09:00-17:00

‘The humanities – training in literary reading in particular – is good at
textual change. Each discipline has its own species of "setting-to-work"…’
. The work of Gayatri Spivak has focused both on change, including
disciplinary change in the Humanities, and on the particular forms of
‘setting-to-work’ involved in post-colonial pedagogies. This colloquium
‘around the work of Gayatri Spivak’ salutes her contribution to teaching and
change, bringing together graduate and faculty speakers for a day of papers
and discussion. A CRASSH/QMUL collaboration, it is part of the AHRC-funded
Interdisciplinary Training Network (IRTN) for graduate students as well as
contributing to the CRASSH-based Centre for Disciplinary Innovation. For
more information visit <http://www.crassh.cam.ac.uk/events/554/>.

St Edmund’s Chapel Choir
************************

St Edmund’s Chapel Choir is looking to recruit new members for this academic
year. We are a small, friendly, non-auditioned group, and sing for the
Sunday Mass at 10.30am (rehearsal from 9.45am), with
rehearsals on Monday evenings 8-9.30pm. We also sing for various special
events in the college calendar. It’s ideal if you’d like to sing in a
choir but can’t put in a huge time commitment. You’ll get a free lunch a
couple of times a term. If you might be interested in joining, email the
Director of Music, Jamie Barron, at jaab3@cam.ac.uk. Alternatively, just
come along to our first rehearsal of term, at 8pm on Monday 6th October.

Emmanuel College Chapel Choir
*****************************

Looking for a choir to sing in this year? Emmanuel College Chapel Choir
undertakes a varied and exciting programme of events while requiring only a
few hours a week of its members’ time, and membership is open to
undergraduates and graduates from across the university. As well as singing
for services in Emma’s beautiful Wren chapel each Thursday and Sunday during
term, we tour regularly – most recently to Sweden, Mexico, Ireland and Italy
- and make occasional trips to cathedrals and churches in the UK. This year
we are planning a tour to Boston. The choir is very friendly, and enjoys
regular outings to pubs, curry houses, etc. After Evensong on Sunday we all
sit down to a (free) formal hall. In addition to this, members receive
heavily subsidized singing lessons. If you would like further information,
or to arrange a short, informal audition, please contact the senior organ
scholar, Joe Fort, on jgf27@cam.ac.uk ASAP (the auditioning period ends on
Thursday 9th October).

Research Volunteers Needed
**************************

Swiss German Speakers Needed for Linguistics Study
————————————————–
I’m looking for native speakers of any dialect of Swiss German for a
linguistics pilot study. It involves listening to sentences in the Zuerich
dialect and making decisions on what you heard. It takes about half an hour
and you get paid £4. It takes place in the Phonetics lab on Sidgwick site.
Please contact Ruth – reg50@cam.ac.uk if you are interested.

Healthy Female Volunteers Needed for a Psychological Research Study
——————————————————————-
The study involves an initial telephone interview involving some personal
health questions. This may then be followed by two sessions of computer
tasks, questionnaires and diet manipulation. We will reimburse you for
participation. You must be female, physically healthy, aged 20-50 and have
never suffered from depression. Please contact Oliver Robinson at the
Department of Psychiatry, ojr23@cam.ac.uk, for further information.

Reward and Decision-Making: Volunteers Needed for Psychology Study
——————————————————————
The study involves an initial behavioural testing session, which may be
followed by a second session where you will complete a decision-making task
in an fMRI scanner. Total participation time is less than 3 hours. We will
reimburse you for participation, and you will get to take home a picture of
your brain. You must be female, right-handed, physically healthy, aged
18-50, and fluent in English. Please contact Molly Crockett at the
Department of Experimental Psychology, (01223) 764428, mc536@cam.ac.uk

Male Volunteers Wanted
———————-
I’m Jacky from the Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit on Chaucer Road, and I
currently need a few male volunteers. The experiment takes about 1 hour 15
minutes and involves pressing buttons to indicate the direction of stimuli
presented on the screen. You get paid £7.50 + £2.50 travel expenses, plus
an extra reward depending on your performance. If you are willing to
participate, please indicate which days/times generally suit you in your
email, to rongjun.yu@mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk. If you have already participated,
please do not reply again.

Do you have a baby boy aged 12-24 months?
—————————————–
We are looking for typically developing male children to take part in a
study tracking developmental progress in areas such as language and social
skills over 9-12 months. You will be invited to visit us at the Autism
Research Centre in Cambridge where a trained researcher will give you a few
questionnaires and observe your child playing in a semi-structured manner;
alternatively it might be possible for a researcher to come to your house.
We will reimburse you for your travel costs and offer a report of your
child’s progress at the end of the study. We are also looking for babies
within this age range who have an older sibling with an autism spectrum
diagnosis. If interested, please email jcs69@cam.ac.uk or visit
<http://tinyurl.com/camautismstudy>.

Postal questionnaire for parents of 4-6 year old boys
—————————————————–
I am also looking for parents of 4-6 year old boys (typically developing) to
fill in some postal questionnaires. These questionnaires should take no more
than 30 minutes and you would be helping investigate the difference between
autistic and non-autistic ability pattern sets. If you would be interested
in participating, please enter your contact details at
<http://tinyurl.com/camcsstudy> or email jcs69@cam.ac.uk
