Copenhagen by Michael Frayn (6 Mar)
***********************************
Tuesday 6th March 2007, 19:45-22:30, ADC Theatre

The ADC Proudly presents Michael Frayn’s Copenhagen: Tues-Thur £7/£5,
Fri&Sat £8/£6.
Pre-booking (free at <http://www.adctheatre.com>) is strongly recommended
for what promises to be an innovative and exciting show. It had been one of
the classic relationships of science: both Nobel laureates, Niels Bohr and
Werner Heisenberg discovered quantum mechanics, putting human subjectivity
back at the centre of the universe and raising the awful spectre of nuclear
annihilation. But as Frayn himself says, "How do we know why people do what
they do?" In 1941, the old friends met in Nazi-occupied Copenhagen. Niels
Bohr and his wife Margrethe entertained their old friend and colleague
Werner Heisenberg, who was heading the Nazi nuclear programme. Now they are
"dead and gone" they attempt to piece together that fateful evening, to make
history certain, and to work out exactly why that meeting ended the
scientists’ relationship. Michael Frayn’s enthralling drama portrays the
human faces and interrelationships behind quantum theory and the development
of the nuclear bomb, and suggests a fascinating parallel between the
indeterminacy of human thinking and the indeterminacy that Heisenberg
introduced into physics with his Uncertainty Principle. This beautifully
designed production promises to bring to life a fascinating relationship and
the irresistible human need to agree upon the past. With international
concerns about nuclear projects once again on the political agenda,
Copenhagen addresses the key issues that continue to be raised by this
important debate.

The Cambridge Spies (6 Mar)
***************************
Tuesday 6th March 2007, 19:30-20:30, St Catharine’s College Hall

Professor Andrew is President of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge,
Professor of Modern and Contemporary History and Official Historian of the
Security Service (MI5). His most recent book, "The Mitrokhin Archive: The
KGB in Europe and the West" was based on top-secret material smuggled to
Britain by a former KGB archivist. Though not its most important revelation,
the book brought to light the activities of the ‘granny-spy’, Melita
Norwood, the longest-serving Russian agent in Britain; a story reported in
many national newspapers. In recent years, his paper on intelligence history
has been taken by more final-year Cambridge Historians than any other. For

CUID, founding member of the U8, presents: Prof. Sunil Shaunak, Imperial
College and Hammersmith Hospital London. "The lives of poor people in
developing countries should not be a commodity dependent upon their ability
to pay for medicines that cure infectious diseases. There is an opportunity
to make cost-affordable medicines for patients who currently receive no
treatment at all. Millions of pounds rather than billions of pounds can have
a major impact in parts of the world where big pharmaceutical companies have
little interest. Saving the lives of poor people in developing countries
shouldn’t be this complicated, but it is". (Prof. Shaunak)
