21 May: Join the GU Exec Committee, Students Deserve Better Survey, GU Council Meeting

Posted by & filed under .

Dear Graduates,

We hope this bulletin finds you well!

This is a last call for new members for the GU Executive Committee – we will be holding elections during our next GU Council meeting, 6pm on Wednesday 29 May, so anyone interested should get in touch with Jennie at enquiries@gradunion.cam.ac.uk.

Full details are at http://www.gradunion.cam.ac.uk/gradunion/who/join/.

Also in the bulletin is the “Students Deserve Better” survey – this is a new GU/CUSU campaign for better college welfare provision. We’ve put together this survey because we are trying to get students views on the college welfare system in Cambridge. As matters stand, the University delegates “welfare” to the colleges, primarily through the tutor system, and we want to get a better understanding of YOUR personal experiences of the Cambridge welfare system.

You can find more details about the survey on the CUSU website: http://www.cusu.cam.ac.uk/campaigns/studentsdeservebetter/.

The next GU Council Meeting is at 6pm on Wednesday 29 May. If you are a voting member please be sure to come along to vote in an interim GU President, appoint GU Trustees, and vote in your new GU Executive Committee. Graduate Union members are also welcome to attend.

Best wishes for the coming week!

Dear all

We hope that this bulletin finds you well. Two major things to flag up; next week, our Meet New People at a Free Film night brings Oscar winner “Argo” to the GU (profound apologies for the mistake in last week’s bulletin, which made a mistake with the date!). Certainly one to watch. There’s a pun in their somewhere, but its not very good. Better ones on a postcard, please.

Secondly, and on a more serious note, there will be an Emergency Meeting of GU Council at 6pm, Friday 10th to discuss the situation at the GU and the recent press coverage. All members of the GU are welcome to attend. If you would like to submit a motion or an item for discussion, please speak to your MCR committee. Deadline for motions is Sunday 5th at 5pm.

Freshers week has ended and I hope that you enjoyed it!

In the Graduate Union we are still rectifying the constitutional problem. We have formed an Advisory Committee with several MCR representatives in order to address this problem. We are also inviting all students and academics to discuss the crisis that our Union is currently facing, a crisis that threatens to deprive us of our democratic rights and freedom to decide for ourselves.
