Graduates at Sidney make up about one third of the student population. Altogether we form a relatively small community enjoying close and friendly ties between graduates and the JCR. Members of the MCR have a comfortable common room with hi-fi, TV, video, DVD player and a coffee machine.
Graduate Guest Nights are popular and sociable events held fortnightly during term-time, there are weekly film nights, and the MCR arranges many other events. The MCR is always open to new suggestions and ideas for events, and exchange dinners and parties with other colleges' MCRs have proved a very successful extension to our social programme. Any gaps in graduate facilities are filled by joint facilities with the JCR; at Sidney everybody knows everybody, and the undergrads are usually delighted to receive helping hands in the many sports clubs and societies in college. The JCR bar is a well stocked and favourite meeting place, whilst Sidney's library has both an impressive range of titles in many subject areas (growing fast - graduates are welcome to recommend new books), and plentiful computing facilities.
Accommodation is usually guaranteed to graduates in their first year, though this is more likely to be in one of the college's graduate or mixed houses than in the college itself, whilst there are a limited number of wardenships available in subsequent years. Married accommodation is limited, the College having only 3 flats for couples with no children; no accommodation can be provided for students with children. Although rents are not cheap, they remain approximately in line with the average for Cambridge colleges. Although the college is not as rich as some, it is generous with the money it does have available, in the form of travel or research expenses awards and funds for those in financial hardship. Additionally, a research studentship and several studentships in law are annually granted.
